So while this big grill approach could allow for more airflow and cooling, I personally think it is for aesthetics mainly. Since there is still no airflow going through the grill at the horizontal number plate support beam, BMW could have designed the front end to have two smaller, traditional kidneys and one larger lower front intake a la the e9x and f8x M cars.

IMO, that "license plate support beam's" primary function is mostly about crash worthiness
