It is not the first time that a widely panned design becomes a best seller for BMW.
The E65 7 Series was ridiculed at launch, no one liked the flame surfacing and the Bangle butt. In addition, it was also plagued with first year electronics problems (first version of iDrive). Yet BMW sold more E65s than the E38s over their respective lifecycles.
If nothing else, the additional Touring variant will help take some sales away from the RS4 Avant in Europe/Asia.
