I can't speak to the OP, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since he owns an E36 M3.
But in my experience most salespeople, especially BMW ones, are not BMW enthusiasts. Most probably haven't even worked for the company very long. They just want to push volume.
It's always funny watching BMW salespeople draw blanks when you ask them about things like steering, handling, etc. Their responses are usually "there's a sport mode for that" or "there's an X5M for that."
