He's just being prescient. Someday soon, Portland will be everywhere. A dark future, indeed.
There are some decent roads on the west side of the Metro. 219 down to Newberg can be fun if you get lucky and avoid Crosstreks going 20 under, and most of the roads out to the coast have some charm to them.
