I totally see what you are saying about the fenders/wheel arches, but when I first saw the gap I thought they were trying to achieve the same aero you see on GTLM race cars for example (race technology being passed down). If you notice there is also a gap in the front. Look up the Jaguar Project 8 for an example on a street car with the gaps in front and back (

That said on second look this is not as aggressive as the Project 8 so probably just a preproduction thing that will be filled in. Also would likely be a bit aggressive for a base level M3/M4 and likely only an something you would see on a CSL or GT4 version of the car.
