Yep that is right, I recall hearing this in one of the BMW M videos around M xDrive.

IMO M Drive Professional is a must have if you are ordering the M xDrive version as it gives you some level of protection against slippage when you want to have fun in RWD mode (although it is no substitute for MDM mode which will only work in "4WD Sport" mode, as MDM does more than just limiting slip, it also applies braking interventions)
