It's a good car. Drive both and see for yourself. It feels cheaper, there are technical differences (X3 sends power to the rear, then front all the time, X1 sends power to the front and to the rear when needed).
If you can't feel a difference and like the drive of the X1 (I've had them as loaners and they were ok, but back in the X3 and I always appreciated that) it might be a good car.
However, I'm not sure the ground clearance is the same, they look and feel much closer to the ground, and I can't really recommend them straight away because I haven't done any research on competitors of that segment.
