I think they compete as luxury driver's cars. I agree the M2 probably makes more sense to cross shop, but that price gap is enormous, as is the interior quality gap.

I don't need the utility of G8X but don't mind having it. If GTS 4.0 and G8X were exact same price then the only thing holding me back from Porsche would be that I can get an M3 in AWD, but I'm trying to examine if rain/snow traction is maybe not as much of an issue with RWD mid engine design.

Yesterday I compared leases for identically priced Cayman GTS 4.0 and M3 with lease estimates per the configurators and the same lease is about $150/mo more for the Cayman. Normal M3 builds will be substantially less than the Cayman so talking more like $300-400/mo difference.
