Here's a take: The SPs guys made clear and thanked both BMW and Lexus for giving them the cars to test drive. From a political perspective, they had to show some love to the Lexus. It seemed like participation trophies being handed out for best dressed at a track meet.
I saw my first M4 in the wild yesterday approaching in the opposite direction, it's got loads of road presence. It just looks different (and good to me) on the road.
