I actually do this to my wheels in spring and in fall, about the same times i do my oil change.

If you use wheel guard, or some sort of paste wax (i find paste wax to be better than liquid wax), brake dust doesn't really adhere to the wheels as much making daily cleaning routine a lot easier when you do clean the wheels during each wash.
