If they make the 6MT they have a completely captive market. Their on paper competitors like the C63, RS5 and Alfa Quad don't have 6MT so the hardcore manual lovers will always buy the M3

That is true, which is why they needn't ditch it. It's keeping a certain segment of customers from going elsewhere.
