There is no option for a RWD M5 so it made sense they would carry over the AWD system to the CS rather than spend money on engineering out the front drive for a limited edition model.
The M3/M4 has both drivetrains in production yet it appears they are choosing the AWD solution for the CS. I would have to expected them to go with the already developed RWD system on the sportier variant. I'm sure they have their reasons (performance, differentiation etc).
