Meh I'd argue there's a lot of cross shopping amongst the enthusiast crowd. Many 1/2-series, M3/4/5 guys also own Porsches or view the Bimmer as a stop-gap to an eventual Boxster/Cayman or 911.
BMW needs to do a lot better with their steering calibration. The steering in cars like the Giulia, Boxster, Macan, and even Cayenne feels so much more naturally-weighted and provide a good sense of the front end without fatiguing the driver. I don't feel the steering on any of those cars is stiff or uncomfortable enough to scare off buyers.
BMW has shown with their stiff suspensions on vehicles like the G20 and most M models that they do want the cars to feel sporting. Why they refuse to improve their steering baffles me.
