CF Roof or Sunroof?
I’m torn between which roof to go with on Alpine White M3 Comp.
I have had a full glass roof w/ sunroof for the past 10+ years. I like opening my roof and venting it. I also like the open light that comes in. I’m curious how the white roof line will look without the black CF. Anyone have a picture of AW with sunroof instead of CF? Other thoughts and guidance appreciated. |

It sounds like you really like the function of the sunroof. I think the car will look fine without it but maybe a little less ‘special’ because carbon fiber=race car.
You should get what you really want, as for pictures…it seems the take rate on sunroofs are pretty low on this car. I haven’t seen any white ones with it yet. Hopefully someone will post up some pics for you. |

On this generation M3 can you attach a roof rack to the car when optioning the carbon roof? I lifted the little doors on the roof and it looks like the threaded holes are there (vs the previous gen that required specification of the moonroof to get the rack mounts)

I love a sun roof!
I went went the CF roof but I totally get it. I'd say get the sunroof if you like them that much and get the roof wrapped gloss black or in Carbon if you like the look |

I used to have to have a sunroof in all of my cars, and somewhere along the line I realized that I don't even use them, anymore. I paid extra for a higher model in my first few cars I ever owned, because they upper model had a sunroof, and I only remember using it maybe 3 times in 100k miles. My commuter, now, 21 Accord, has a sunroof, and I've opened it to see how loud the car is, at speed with it open, and then closed it, and it hasn't been opened, since. I even bought an OEM tinted sunroof deflector for it, and I already removed it.

I’ve had a sunroof in most of my cars minus my F80. I never (or very very rarely) use it. CF all the way for me. I don’t need the function of the sunroof and the CF makes the car look even more special.

Such a personal decision. CF roof looks better and is special but it's darker and obviously can't let the air and sun in. Personally I have always had a sunroof but never use it. The noise and light bother me. My wife uses hers all the time. So for me it was an easy decision because I won't miss the sunroof.

Definitely a personal decision. I went through the same back and forth with myself for a while. I've had Sunroofs for 12 years (and used them all the time), but the CF roof just looked really good so I was torn. Two things ended up helping me make my decision to go with CF:
1) I closed my sunroof (and the shade) and drove around like that for a week or two to see if I'd really miss it. At first it was annoying, but at some point I realized it didn't bother me at at all, I think I was using it more out of habit than need. 2) I'm getting an M3 so the rear windows will give me another way to get some airflow through the car if I don't want a ton of wind through the front windows.

Struggled with this for a while too. I have a aw awd g80 on order. I decided on the cf roof after a while. My raptor has the panoramic roof. It's cool, and lightens the cabin, but the Cf roof is a really cool option. Rarely have the roof open. Plus the black cf roof really sets off the aw car.

I use sunroofs a lot, and love them, but never contemplated getting it for my G80. The carbon roof is a standout piece for the cars, I love it

I just placed an order last week for a 6MT with the carbon exterior package and opted for the sunroof. My SA said that of the 50 orders he had for an M4, nobody had spec’d with a sunroof. I really don’t care because I use my sunroof all the time. Not only for the air flow but I always find that the natural light makes the cabin feel significantly larger and for a two door car, that was important to me.

Thanks for all replies, really helps! I was wondering about how it would look on the white roof if I wrapped it in black? I hadn’t thought of carbon fiber wrap? Sounds like this is available? Sounds like this might be a good way to kinda have both. |

Here another frozen white M4 with sunroof. Not sure it helps anymore. I felt it a bit on the small side compared to the roofs at other cars. Once I read that the weight difference between CF and sunroof option is about 60 pounds I kept the standard CF.

- headroom is decreased with sunroof, particularly an issue for tall people (or close) that will plan to track and wear a helmet - CF roof is essentially weight-saving over aluminum roof in that you ditch the sunroof - E90/E92 eventually had aftermarket CF roof that could replace aluminum roof for those that purchased model with sunroof; I have no idea if this ever happened with F80/F82 My humble opinion is that the CF is otherwise a ridiculous feature on this car. It’s reached “Z3 fender” status with all sorts of cars trying to replicate the look. Does it still look cool, and will I option it on my order? Yes. And yes. |

I'm moonroof crew. My E90 had a moonroof, and my F80 had the CF. My F80 was black, and I think it looked good. I'm going with Skyscraper this time, and I prefer the painted roof.

I'm with the moonroof / sunroof crew too. The G80 is a track capable street car. Or a modern spec track car in relative street trim. 90-95% of the these cars won't see a track more than 3-4 times per year at best. I'll get way more enjoyment from the sunroof on a daily basis then I will a staring up at a lighter weight fixed CF roof.
My X3 MC has a huge pano-roof, my E90 335i has a sunroof, my E39 M5 had a sunroof, my E36 M3 has a sunroof. The only car that didn't was my light weight M2. Now that's a smaller, lighter weight coupe that's designed for the even more track focused enthusiast and therefore may make more sense to not have a sunroof option selected. Yes, this sunroof is 60 lbs heavier. But on the street (where the car lives most its life) I can't feel any huge SOTP (seat of the pants) difference.
